Creating a clipping path in Photoshop is a simple process that involves using the Pen Tool to outline the subject you want to isolate from the background.
Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Open the Image
- Open the image in Photoshop by going to File > Open and selecting your file.
Step 2: Select the Pen Tool (shortcut: P)
- Ensure the Path option is selected in the top menu (not Shape).
Step 3: Draw the Path
- Zoom in (Ctrl+ or Cmd+) to get a closer view of the edges of your subject.
- Click to place anchor points along the edge of your subject.
- Use click-and-drag to create curves when needed.
- If necessary, adjust points using the Direct Selection Tool (shortcut: A).
- Continue outlining until you return to the starting point and complete the path.
Step 4: Save the Path
- Go to the Menu Bar Window > paths panel
- The path you created will be listed as “Work Path.” Double-click it and name it (e.g., “Clipping Path”).
- Hit OK to save.
Step 5: Define as Clipping Path
- Go to the Paths panel and select on the path.
- In the pop-up window, confirm your path name and click OK.
Step 6: Save the File
- Save the File in a format that supports clipping paths, such as JPEG or PSD.
- Go to File select Save As, choose Photoshop JPEG, TIF and save.
Tips
- For complex edges (like hair), consider combining the clipping path with other techniques, such as masks or selection tools.
- Use Ctrl+T or Cmd+T to transform and fine-tune the placement of anchor points.
